Anti-Aging Peptides: What the Research Actually Shows

Golden render of a DNA double helix

No peptide has been shown to slow human ageing. What the research offers is more specific and, in its way, more interesting: individual molecules that act on individual biological processes linked to ageing, studied mostly in cells and animals. The clearest way to understand them is to sort them by which of those processes they target.

This guide does that, using the scientific framework of the “hallmarks of ageing”, and is honest about how far each peptide has actually been tested.

The short answer

  • “Anti-aging peptides” is a loose label for peptides studied against specific processes linked to ageing, such as telomere shortening, mitochondrial decline, cellular senescence and chronic inflammation.
  • Epitalon is studied in telomere research, SS-31, MOTS-c and humanin in mitochondrial research, FOXO4-DRI in senescence, and GHK-Cu in tissue repair.
  • Only two in this guide have reached approval anywhere, each for one specific disease: SS-31 (elamipretide) for Barth syndrome in the US, and thymosin alpha-1 abroad.
  • None is approved to treat or slow ageing, and most of the evidence comes from cell and animal studies.
  • Pure Peptides Canada supplies them as laboratory research reagents, not for human use.

The hallmarks of ageing

In 2013, Carlos López-Otín and colleagues published a framework in Cell that sorted the biology of ageing into nine “hallmarks”, processes that change with age, speed ageing when aggravated in experiments, and slow it when improved. A 2023 update expanded the list to twelve: genomic instability, telomere attrition, epigenetic alterations, loss of proteostasis, disabled macroautophagy, deregulated nutrient sensing, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence, stem cell exhaustion, altered intercellular communication, chronic inflammation and dysbiosis.

The framework is useful here because it turns a vague promise, “anti-aging”, into a testable question: which hallmark does this peptide act on, and in what?

Two reminders about this table. A peptide appearing next to a hallmark means researchers have studied it there, not that it reverses that hallmark. And NAD+, often grouped with these peptides, is not a peptide at all: it is a coenzyme that sirtuin enzymes need, and its levels fall with age in several tissues.

How far each has been tested

Furthest stage of research for seven anti-aging research peptides SS-31 and thymosin alpha-1 have reached approval somewhere for a specific disease. GHK-Cu has small human topical studies. Epitalon, MOTS-c, FOXO4-DRI and KPV have reached animal studies. Furthest stage of research Cell Animal Small human Approved somewhere SS-31 Thymosin α1 GHK-Cu Epitalon MOTS-c FOXO4-DRI KPV Approvals are for specific diseases: SS-31 for Barth syndrome (US), thymosin alpha-1 abroad. None is approved for ageing.
Human data for Epitalon come mostly from its parent pineal extract, and MOTS-c’s human data are observational, so both are shown at the animal stage for interventional evidence.

How to read anti-aging claims

The longevity field moves fast, and marketing moves faster. Three questions cut through most claims:

  • What was measured? A rise in a gene-expression marker or a cell-culture result is not the same as better health in a living animal.
  • In what? Fast-ageing mouse models, naturally aged mice and people are very different evidence. Most of the results in this guide stop at mice.
  • Who found it? Several of these peptides rest mainly on one research group’s work. Independent replication, like the 2025 Epitalon cell study, is what turns a claim into a finding.

Reasonably well established

  • Each peptide here has published, peer-reviewed research on a specific ageing-related process.
  • SS-31 has an FDA accelerated approval, and thymosin alpha-1 approvals abroad, for specific diseases.

Open questions

  • Whether any of them slows ageing in humans; none has been shown to.
  • How combinations behave; blends are rarely studied as blends.
  • Long-term safety, which short studies cannot answer.

Also in the category: NAD+, N-acetyl Epitalon and Pinealon.

Frequently asked questions

What are anti-aging peptides?

“Anti-aging peptides” is an informal label for peptides studied against specific biological processes linked to ageing, such as telomere shortening, mitochondrial decline, cellular senescence and chronic inflammation. Examples include Epitalon, SS-31, MOTS-c, FOXO4-DRI and GHK-Cu.

Has any peptide been shown to slow human ageing?

No. Most of the research is in cells and animals. A few peptides have human data for specific diseases, such as SS-31 for Barth syndrome, but none has been shown to slow ageing in people.

What are the hallmarks of ageing?

They are a scientific framework, first published in 2013 and expanded in 2023 to twelve processes, that groups the biology of ageing into categories such as telomere attrition, mitochondrial dysfunction, cellular senescence and chronic inflammation.

Which anti-aging peptides have human data?

SS-31 (elamipretide) received FDA accelerated approval for Barth syndrome in 2025, thymosin alpha-1 is approved abroad for other conditions, and GHK-Cu has small topical cosmetic studies. The others rely mainly on cell and animal research.

Are any anti-aging peptides approved in Canada?

None is approved in Canada to treat or slow ageing. Pure Peptides Canada sells these compounds strictly as laboratory research reagents that are not for human or veterinary use.

Does Pure Peptides Canada ship these peptides across Canada?

Yes. Orders ship tracked and discreetly across Canada, usually arriving by Xpresspost in 3–7 days, or free in 4–12 days on orders over $299, with free shipping on orders over $299.
