Epitalon (Epithalon): What the Research Shows

Clear glass laboratory bottles on a white table

Epitalon is a four-amino-acid peptide with an outsized reputation. Developed in St. Petersburg as a synthetic stand-in for a pineal gland extract, it is best known for a 2003 report that it switched on telomerase in human cells. Some of that work has since been reproduced by an independent lab. Much of the rest has not.

This guide separates what is known about Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) from what is claimed, and explains what to check before ordering research-grade Epitalon in Canada.

The short answer

  • Epitalon is the tetrapeptide Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG), developed by Vladimir Khavinson’s group at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology.
  • It was designed as a synthetic analogue of epithalamin, a peptide extract from bovine pineal glands.
  • A 2003 study reported that it induced telomerase activity and lengthened telomeres in cultured human fibroblasts. A 2025 independent study reported similar effects in cell lines.
  • Animal lifespan results are mixed, and most of the literature comes from one research network. Human data mostly involve the parent extract, not synthetic Epitalon.
  • Epitalon is not an approved medicine. Research-grade Epitalon is a laboratory reagent.

What Epitalon is

Epitalon belongs to the family of short bioregulator peptides developed by Vladimir Khavinson and colleagues in St. Petersburg. The approach began with extracts from animal glands, in this case epithalamin from the pineal gland, and moved toward short synthetic peptides that could be made and studied precisely. Epitalon is the synthetic four-residue peptide chosen to stand in for epithalamin.

At about 390 g/mol it is tiny, even by peptide standards: four amino acids, two of them acidic. For the wider family and the theory behind it, see our explainer on bioregulator peptides.

The telomerase question

Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. In most adult human cells they shorten a little with every division, and when they become too short the cell stops dividing. The enzyme telomerase can rebuild them by adding short DNA repeats, but in most adult tissues it is largely switched off. It is also switched on in most cancers, which is why anything that activates it attracts both interest and caution.

How telomeres shorten, and what telomerase does Three chromosome bars show telomere caps getting shorter with repeated cell division. A fourth bar shows telomerase rebuilding long caps by adding TTAGGG repeats. Telomeres shorten with each division Young cell Many divisions later Near senescence With telomerase active Blue caps are telomeres. Telomerase adds TTAGGG repeats to rebuild them. Not to scale.
Epitalon’s reputation rests on reports that it switched on hTERT, the catalytic part of telomerase, in cultured human cells.

In 2003, Khavinson, Bondarev and Butyugov reported that adding Epitalon to telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblasts in culture induced expression of hTERT, restored measurable telomerase activity and lengthened telomeres. The paper reported the effect qualitatively, without detailed statistics.

In 2025, an independent group reported telomere extension in normal human epithelial and fibroblast cell lines treated with Epitalon, with increased hTERT expression. In cancer cell lines, telomeres also lengthened, but through a different route called alternative lengthening of telomeres. That is a useful replication and a reminder that the effect depends on the cell type. Neither study shows what happens in a living organism.

Animal and pineal research

Most animal work comes from the same St. Petersburg network. Fruit-fly studies reported mean lifespan gains of roughly 11 to 16%. Mouse studies are more mixed: results vary with strain, sex and treatment schedule, and some reported changes in maximum rather than average lifespan. Studies in aged monkeys reported that Epitalon restored more youthful patterns of melatonin release, consistent with its pineal origin.

Human data are thin and indirect. Russian cohort studies in elderly patients mostly used the parent extract, epithalamin, rather than synthetic Epitalon, and they have not been reproduced by independent groups.

What is still open

Reasonably well established

  • Epitalon is a defined synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly.
  • Two separate groups have reported increased hTERT and longer telomeres in cultured human cells.
  • It is not an approved medicine anywhere in North America.

Open questions

  • Whether cell-culture effects occur in living tissue.
  • Why animal lifespan results vary between studies.
  • Long-term safety, given telomerase’s role in cancer.
  • Independent replication of the animal and human work.

Alongside standard Epitalon, we carry N-acetyl Epitalon, which has an acetyl cap on its first residue, a common modification meant to slow breakdown. Most published research used the unmodified peptide, so treat the acetylated form as related but distinct. Pinealon is another short Khavinson peptide, and Thymogen is a dipeptide from the same bioregulator tradition.

Sourcing Epitalon in Canada

Epitalon is short and simple, which makes it easy to verify when the testing is done properly. Before ordering, check that:

Regulatory status in 2026

Two 2026 developments matter for anyone working with Epitalon. In April, Health Canada’s advisory on unauthorized injectable peptides listed Epitalon among products it had seized and stated that “For Research Use Only” labelling does not make such products legal or exempt from regulatory requirements.

In the United States, the FDA removed Epitalon from Category 2 of its compounding list, the group of substances that raise significant safety risks, and referred it to its Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee. At its July 23–24, 2026 meeting, the committee voted 7 to 5 to recommend adding Epitalon to the list of substances pharmacies may compound, overriding FDA staff, who had recommended against it. The vote is advisory: Epitalon has not been added to the list, it is not an FDA-approved drug, and formal rulemaking would still be required.

Frequently asked questions

What is Epitalon?

Epitalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly, developed in St. Petersburg as an analogue of epithalamin, a peptide extract from the pineal gland. It is studied mainly for its reported effects on telomerase and on pineal function in cell and animal models.

Is Epitalon the same as Epithalon?

Yes. Epitalon, Epithalon and Epithalone are different spellings of the same peptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly (AEDG).

Does Epitalon activate telomerase?

In cultured human cells, two separate studies, in 2003 and 2025, reported increased expression of hTERT, the catalytic part of telomerase, and longer telomeres. Whether that happens in living tissue has not been shown.

What is the difference between Epitalon and epithalamin?

Epithalamin is a mixture of peptides extracted from bovine pineal glands. Epitalon is a single, defined synthetic tetrapeptide developed as its stand-in. Much of the older human data involve epithalamin, not Epitalon.

Is Epitalon approved in Canada?

No. Epitalon is not an authorized drug in Canada or the United States. A July 2026 FDA advisory committee vote recommending it for the US compounding list is not an approval, and Health Canada’s April 2026 advisory listed Epitalon among unauthorized injectable peptides it had seized. Pure Peptides Canada sells it strictly as a laboratory research reagent that is not for human or veterinary use.

What is N-acetyl Epitalon?

It is Epitalon with an acetyl group on its first amino acid, a modification commonly used to slow enzymatic breakdown. It weighs about 42 g/mol more than the unmodified peptide, and it has far less published research behind it.
