Description

Crystagen is the synthetic tripeptide Glu-Asp-Pro (EDP), listed by its St. Petersburg developers as an immunomodulator and described in their 2011 patent as having an immunogeroprotective effect in ageing models. Pure Peptides Canada supplies it as a lyophilized research reagent in 20 mg vials, with an independent Janoshik HPLC and mass-spectrometry report, CAD pricing and tracked shipping from inside Canada.

Crystagen at a glance

  • What it is: L-glutamyl-L-aspartyl-L-proline (EDP), a synthetic tripeptide from Vladimir Khavinson’s bioregulator programme.
  • What researchers study: growth of thymus and spleen explants from old rats, macrophage and thymic epithelial-cell responses in ageing models, and how EDP compares with the immune-associated peptides Vilon and Thymogen.
  • Evidence level: thin. The main experimental account is the developers’ own patent, which is not peer-reviewed, and beyond molecular modelling we found little peer-reviewed experimental work.
  • Supplied as: sealed lyophilized powder, 20 mg, single vial or box of 10.
  • Delivery: ships from inside Canada by tracked Xpresspost in 3–7 days ($25 CAD), or free in 4–12 days on orders over $299.

What is Crystagen?

Crystagen is the trade name for L-glutamyl-L-aspartyl-L-proline, a tripeptide from the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. Vladimir Khavinson’s 2014 overview of the institute’s synthetic peptides lists it, spelled Kristagen, as an immunomodulator, the same designation given to Thymogen (Glu-Trp). Its main published description is US patent 8,057,810, granted in 2011 from a 2006 Russian application, which claims the free-acid peptide H-Glu-Asp-Pro-OH.

The sequence ties Crystagen to several neighbours in this catalogue. Its three residues are the last three of Cortagen (Ala-Glu-Asp-Pro) and Prostamax (Lys-Glu-Asp-Pro), and its Glu-Asp opening is shared with Pinealon (EDR), Chonluten (EDG) and Ovagen (EDL), from which it differs by its C-terminal proline.

By designation its closest relative is Thymogen; by modelling it is Vilon (Lys-Glu), which the group’s 2016 docking study placed at the same DNA site as EDP. Published experimental data on EDP are sparse: it is not among the peptides covered in the developers’ 2021 systematic review of peptide gene regulation, and most of what is known comes from the patent examples below.

What the patent and published studies report

  • Old-rat tissue explants: in organotypic culture, thymus explants from 24-month-old rats grew about 24% more and spleen explants about 28% more than control explants (patent example 2).
  • Macrophages and thymic epithelium: peritoneal macrophages from 19- to 20-month-old mice produced more lymphocyte-activating factor with the peptide, with or without bacterial lipopolysaccharide, and an SV40-transformed human embryonic thymic epithelial line took up more thymidine at passage 7 but showed no clear change at passages 1 and 4 (examples 3 and 4).
  • Irradiated rats: in young rats exposed to repeated gamma irradiation as a model of radiation-induced premature ageing, the patent describes less thymic involution in animals that received the peptide (example 5).
  • Lymphocytes from older donors: in cultured lymphocytes from donors aged 75–88, the patent reports more associations between nucleolus-organizer chromosomes, more sister-chromatid exchanges and smaller C-heterochromatin blocks on chromosomes 1 and 9, which it reads as chromatin activation; its text and table disagree on the direction of the change in Ag-NOR associations (example 6).
  • DNA docking: in a 2016 modelling study of 19 short peptides, EDP and KE (Vilon) were both assigned the AGAT sequence, with EDP forming one more hydrogen bond to cytosine and rated the more stable complex (Khavinson and colleagues, Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2016). This is a computer model, not a measured interaction.

What is not established: whether any of these effects holds up in independent, peer-reviewed experiments; whether EDP behaves differently from Vilon, Thymogen or the EDP-containing tetrapeptides; and whether it enters cells or binds DNA at all outside a computer model. Patent examples are written to support a claim and do not go through scientific peer review.

Regulatory status: Crystagen is not an authorized drug in Canada. We sell it strictly as a laboratory reagent for in-vitro research.

Crystagen FAQ

Where can I buy Crystagen in Canada?

Pure Peptides Canada stocks Crystagen as a lyophilized research reagent in 20 mg vials and ships it from inside Canada by tracked Xpresspost in 3–7 days ($25 CAD), or free in 4–12 days on orders over $299.

What sequence is Crystagen?

Glu-Asp-Pro (EDP), a tripeptide. The identity mass on the lab report should be close to 359 Da. The same three residues form the C-terminal end of Cortagen (AEDP) and Prostamax (KEDP).

How is Crystagen related to Vilon and thymogen?

All three are short peptides linked to the immune system in the St. Petersburg programme: Vilon is Lys-Glu, thymogen is Glu-Trp and Crystagen is Glu-Asp-Pro. In the group’s 2016 docking model, Crystagen and Vilon were placed at the same DNA site, AGAT.

Where does most of the data on Crystagen come from?

From the developers’ US patent 8,057,810 (2011), which reports experiments in thymus and spleen explants from old rats, macrophages from ageing mice, a thymic epithelial cell line, irradiated rats and lymphocytes from older donors. Patent data are not peer-reviewed, and we found no independent replication.

Can Crystagen be used in people or animals?

No. This product is for in-vitro laboratory research only and is not a drug, supplement or food. We do not provide dosing or administration information.
