What is Vilon?
Vilon is a defined synthetic dipeptide: L-lysine joined to L-glutamic acid. Its developers report that it reproduces some effects of thymalin, the calf-thymus peptide complex it was designed from, and a 2021 mass-spectrometry study by the same group detected Lys-Glu as a minor natural component of thymalin, together with Glu-Asp-Pro, the sequence of Crystagen.
Lys-Glu also opens several longer peptides from the same programme: Vesugen (Lys-Glu-Asp), Livagen (Lys-Glu-Asp-Ala), Prostamax (Lys-Glu-Asp-Pro), Testagen (Lys-Glu-Asp-Gly) and Pancragen (Lys-Glu-Asp-Trp). That makes Vilon a logical baseline when testing what the added residues contribute.
Its closest relative is thymogen (Glu-Trp), the other thymus-derived dipeptide, which was isolated from thymalin and has some literature outside Russia. Vilon’s published work comes almost entirely from its developers, so independent confirmation is the main gap.
What published studies report
- Mouse ageing and tumours, reported twice. In female CBA mice given Vilon from six months of age, a 2000 report (Khavinson and colleagues, Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine) described higher activity and endurance, lower body temperature, a longer lifespan and fewer spontaneous tumours. The fuller 2001 paper (Anisimov and colleagues, Mechanisms of Ageing and Development), comparing Lys-Glu with the pineal tetrapeptide Epitalon and saline in 50 mice, credited Lys-Glu with higher activity and fewer lung adenomas, and reported a survival gain only for Epitalon.
- Gene expression in mouse heart. In a microarray screen of 15,247 cDNA clones, Vilon changed 36 clones more than two-fold, against 98 for Epitalon, which the authors read as peptide-specific effects (Anisimov and colleagues, Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 2002).
- Chromatin in lymphocytes from elderly donors. In cultured lymphocytes from donors aged 76 to 81, Vilon increased silver-stained nucleolus organizer regions, a marker of ribosomal-gene activity, and sister-chromatid exchanges, which the authors read, with calorimetry data, as partial loosening of facultative heterochromatin; C-band heterochromatin did not change (Lezhava and colleagues, Biogerontology, 2004).
- Stem-cell ageing models. In a human fetal bone-marrow mesenchymal stem-cell line aged by passaging or prolonged confluence, Lys-Glu raised IGF1 and NF-κB mRNA and, in the confluent model, raised FOXO1 and lowered TERT. The authors call the results preliminary because only mRNA was measured (Ashapkin and colleagues, Molecular Biology Reports, 2020).

Yes, in small amounts. Vilon (Lys-Glu) was designed from the amino-acid composition of the calf-thymus extract thymalin, and a 2021 mass-spectrometry study by its developers found it as a minor component of the extract. Vilon itself is a single synthetic dipeptide, not an extract.
What is the difference between Vilon and thymogen?
Vilon is Lys-Glu (about 275.3 g/mol), a basic residue joined to an acidic one; thymogen is Glu-Trp (about 333.3 g/mol) and contains tryptophan. Thymogen was isolated from thymalin, while Vilon was designed from its composition.
Does Vilon extend lifespan in mice?
That is not established. A 2000 report from its developers said Vilon prolonged the lifespan of female CBA mice, but their fuller 2001 paper credited Lys-Glu with higher activity and fewer lung adenomas and attributed the survival gain to Epitalon. We found no lifespan study from another laboratory.
