Description
5-Amino-1MQ is a small-molecule inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT), the enzyme that links fat-cell metabolism to NAD+ and cellular methylation. It is one of the few non-peptide compounds in our catalogue, and a reference tool in metabolic research. Pure Peptides Canada supplies it as a lyophilized research reagent in 10 and 50 mg vials, with an independent Janoshik HPLC and mass-spectrometry report, CAD pricing and tracked shipping from inside Canada.

What is 5-Amino-1MQ?
NNMT transfers a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) onto nicotinamide, a form of vitamin B3. It is highly expressed in fat tissue and liver, and higher NNMT activity has been linked in animal studies to obesity and insulin resistance. Because the reaction draws on both the cell’s methyl-donor pool and its NAD+ precursors, NNMT sits at a crossroads of energy metabolism and gene regulation.
A team led by Stanley Watowich at the University of Texas Medical Branch designed a series of quinolinium-based NNMT inhibitors, and 5-amino-1-methylquinolinium emerged as a selective, cell-permeable lead. In a 2018 Biochemical Pharmacology study, mice on a high-fat diet treated with it lost fat mass and showed smaller fat cells without reduced food intake. A 2019 follow-up reported improved regeneration by muscle stem cells in aged mice. These are mouse findings, and the compound has not been tested in controlled human trials.
What 5-Amino-1MQ research looks at
- NNMT inhibition: enzyme kinetics and selectivity against related methyltransferases.
- NAD+ and SAM balance: how blocking NNMT shifts cellular NAD+ and methyl-donor pools.
- Adipocyte metabolism: lipogenesis and energy expenditure in cultured fat cells and diet-induced obesity models.
- Muscle ageing: satellite-cell activity and regeneration in aged mice.
- Related pathways: comparisons with NAD+ precursors such as NAD+ and mitochondrial peptides such as MOTS-c.
Handling note: as a small molecule rather than a peptide, 5-Amino-1MQ has different solubility behaviour from the rest of our catalogue. Check the counter-ion and purity on the lab report before planning stock solutions. Regulatory status: it is not an authorized drug in Canada, and we sell it strictly as a laboratory reagent for in-vitro research.

Where can I buy 5-Amino-1MQ in Canada?
Pure Peptides Canada stocks 5-Amino-1MQ as a lyophilized research reagent in 10 and 50 mg vials and ships it from inside Canada by tracked Xpresspost in 3–7 days ($25 CAD), or free in 4–12 days on orders over $299.
Is 5-Amino-1MQ a peptide?
No. It is a small molecule, a methylquinolinium compound. We stock it alongside our peptides because it is widely used in the same metabolic research programmes.
What does 5-Amino-1MQ do in research?
It inhibits nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT). In mouse studies, blocking NNMT changed NAD+ and methyl-donor balance in fat cells and reduced fat mass in diet-induced obesity models. Our 5-Amino-1MQ research guide covers the studies in detail.
Is this 5-Amino-1MQ third-party tested?
Yes. An HPLC purity and mass-spectrometry identity report from Janoshik Analytical, an independent lab, is listed on our Lab Testing page. For a small molecule, also check the reported counter-ion. Our COA guide explains how to read a report.
Is 5-Amino-1MQ approved in Canada?
No. It is not an authorized drug in Canada or elsewhere. It is sold here only as a laboratory reagent for in-vitro research.
Can 5-Amino-1MQ be used in people or animals?
No. It is for in-vitro laboratory research only and is not a drug, supplement or food. We do not provide dosing or administration information.
For laboratory research use only. Not a drug, supplement, food or cosmetic, not for human or veterinary use, and not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
