Few molecules have a stranger origin story. Kisspeptin was found in 1996 by cancer researchers in Hershey, Pennsylvania, who named its gene after the town’s famous chocolate. Seven years later it turned out to be one of the master switches of human reproduction, the signal that sets puberty in motion.
This guide explains what kisspeptin is, how kisspeptin-10 differs from the longer forms, what human studies have shown, what is still unknown, and what to check before ordering research-grade kisspeptin-10 in Canada.
The short answer
- Kisspeptins are a family of peptides cut from the product of the KISS1 gene. Kisspeptin-54, -14, -13 and -10 share the same final ten residues, which are enough to activate the receptor.
- Their receptor, KISS1R (originally called GPR54), sits on the hypothalamic neurons that release GnRH, the hormone that drives LH and FSH.
- In 2003, two research groups showed that faulty GPR54 causes hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, a failure to enter puberty. That made kisspeptin a gatekeeper of reproduction.
- In healthy volunteers, kisspeptin-54 and kisspeptin-10 raise LH, and kisspeptin-54 has been tested as a trigger for egg maturation in IVF.
- Kisspeptin is not an approved medicine. Research-grade kisspeptin-10 is a laboratory reagent.

From cancer gene to puberty switch
- 1996Danny Welch’s group in Hershey, Pennsylvania, isolates a gene that stops melanoma cells from spreading. They name it KISS1, after the town’s chocolate kisses, and its peptide product is later called metastin.
- 2001Kisspeptins are identified as the natural ligands of an orphan receptor, GPR54.
- 2003Two groups, led by Nicolas de Roux in France and Stephanie Seminara in Boston, report that loss-of-function mutations in GPR54 cause hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: people with the faulty receptor do not go through puberty normally.
- 2005The first human study shows kisspeptin-54 raises LH, FSH and testosterone in healthy men.
- 2011Kisspeptin-10 is shown to be a potent stimulator of LH in men, and its effects turn out to differ between men and women.
- 2014Kisspeptin-54 is tested as a trigger for egg maturation in women undergoing IVF.
Where kisspeptin acts
Reproduction is controlled by a relay. Neurons in the hypothalamus release GnRH in pulses; GnRH tells the pituitary to release LH and FSH; those hormones drive the testes or ovaries, whose sex steroids then feed back on the brain. Kisspeptin sits at the top of that relay. Kisspeptin-producing neurons signal directly to GnRH neurons through KISS1R, and that input appears necessary for GnRH pulses to start at puberty and to continue in adulthood.
Kisspeptin-10 vs kisspeptin-54
The KISS1 gene encodes a precursor protein that is cut into several kisspeptins. Kisspeptin-54, also called metastin, is the most abundant form in human circulation, and it can be trimmed to kisspeptin-14, -13 and -10. All of them end with the same ten amino acids, which is the part that binds and activates KISS1R.
That makes kisspeptin-10 the minimal active unit and a convenient research tool: it is small, straightforward to synthesize and simple to verify by mass spectrometry. The trade-off is duration. The longer kisspeptin-54 lasts longer in circulation, which is why most extended human protocols, including the IVF work, used kisspeptin-54.

View kisspeptin-10What human studies show
The human literature is small but consistent on one point: giving kisspeptin raises LH. A 2005 study of healthy men found kisspeptin-54 increased LH, FSH and testosterone. A 2011 study found kisspeptin-10 to be a potent stimulator of LH that also increased the frequency of LH pulses in men, and another 2011 study reported that responses differ between men and women depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle.
The most clinically developed line of research uses kisspeptin-54 to trigger final egg maturation during IVF, explored as a gentler alternative to standard triggers. That work remains investigational. No kisspeptin product has been approved as a medicine.
What is still open
Reasonably well established
- KISS1R signalling is required for normal puberty and reproductive function in humans.
- Kisspeptin acts upstream of GnRH and raises LH in humans.
- All active kisspeptins share the same C-terminal decapeptide.
Open questions
- How best to use kisspeptin signalling clinically, if at all.
- How its effects differ across sexes, ages and hormonal states.
- How its original role in cancer biology connects to its reproductive role.
Sourcing kisspeptin-10 in Canada
Kisspeptin-10 is a short, well-defined peptide, which makes it easy to verify if the supplier does the work. Before ordering, check that:
- The mass matches, at about 1,302 g/mol. A mass far off that value suggests a different fragment or a synthesis error. See HPLC vs mass spectrometry.
- The label says which kisspeptin. Kisspeptin-10 and kisspeptin-54 are very different molecules, despite the shared name.
- The COA matches your lot. How to read a certificate of analysis walks through it.
- Storage is cold, dry and dark, as for any lyophilized peptide. See our peptide storage guide.

Frequently asked questions
What is kisspeptin?
Kisspeptin is a family of peptides made from the KISS1 gene that activate the receptor KISS1R (GPR54). Kisspeptin signalling to GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus is essential for puberty and normal reproductive hormone release.
Why is it called kisspeptin?
The KISS1 gene was discovered in 1996 by researchers in Hershey, Pennsylvania, home of Hershey’s Kisses chocolates, and they named it after the town’s best-known product.
What is the difference between kisspeptin-10 and kisspeptin-54?
Kisspeptin-54 is the longer, most abundant circulating form. Kisspeptin-10 is its final ten amino acids, the minimal sequence needed to activate the receptor. Kisspeptin-10 is shorter-lived, which is why longer human protocols have tended to use kisspeptin-54.
Is kisspeptin an approved medicine?
No. Kisspeptin has been studied in human physiology and fertility research, but no kisspeptin product has been approved as a medicine. Kisspeptin-10 sold by Pure Peptides Canada is a laboratory reagent and is not for human use.
What did the 2003 GPR54 studies show?
Two research groups found that people with loss-of-function mutations in GPR54, the kisspeptin receptor, had hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and did not go through puberty normally. That showed the kisspeptin system is required for reproduction.
Does Pure Peptides Canada ship kisspeptin-10 across Canada?
Yes. Orders ship tracked and discreetly across Canada, usually arriving by Xpresspost in 3–7 days, or free in 4–12 days on orders over $299, with free shipping on orders over $299.
